Book Culture on Columbus Celebrates Diversity in YA!

Inspired by We Need Diverse Books, a campaign that promotes children's literature "that reflects and honor the lives of all young people," we here at Book Culture on Columbus decided to take a look at the books we had on our shelves. Like many publishers, libraries, and bookstores across the nation, we realized immediately that Book Culture could provide our teen readers with a larger spectrum of voices.

Devon Recommends Books on Urban Wildlife

As spring gives way to summer, the city is booming with life and a flurry of activity. The sun is out, the temperature is rising, and New Yorkers are finally emerging from their cocoons of down coats as shorts-and-sandals adorned butterflies. Okay, maybe that's a little much, but it is exciting to be able to head outdoors without several layers of fleece.

In honor of the change of season, I've put together a list of books that explore the wild, rugged outdoors that exists, even within the confines of the city.  Go forth: Read! Explore! Have fun! Don't forget the sun block!

Devon Recommends Cookbooks for a Cold Winter's Day

I love to cook. When the winter wind howls and the apartment is freezing no matter what I do, there's no better time to fire up the oven, roll up my sleeves, and get cooking. Not only am I a little warmer, but suddenly the house is full of heavenly scents and at the end of it all I get a great meal!   Winter also gives me time to try out new recipes and discover new favorites.  For those looking to start their own culinary adventure this winter, here are some of my current cookbook obsessions.

Edward Said Library Showcase & Sale

This is the first of many blog posts will feature books for sale in our upcoming (and very exciting) Edward Said Library showcase, beginning with an opening reception on Friday, April 3rd, at 6pm and running through Sunday, April 5th

How did we acquire sixty boxes of Said's personal library? After the family of Edward Said donated a large portion of his library to Columbia's Butler Library, we were given many remaining texts inscribed by and to Said, as well as titles influential in the development of cultural studies, literary criticism, middle eastern politics, among others.
