Okay listen, I'm just a sucker, okay? I have a weird pickiness that even I can't define exactly but I really loved reading this. But also, like, anything with some witchcraft (even though it's subtle) along with dramatic gay boys should basically be given to my through an IV. It's cute, it's fun, and it makes a good book for distraction during a particularly stressful time.

Next to Station Eleven, this is the best dystopian novel featuring a world annihilating plague. Oryx and Crake is a bit cooler because it takes place in this terrifying future that doesn't seem too far away from us. A book that leaves you asking questions to the very end and doesn't disappoint.

Journeying through the life of Cyril Avery will be one of the most inspirational and beautiful things you can read-- and I'm using the word "life" as its real meaning. Spanning through 1945-2015, we get the entire life of Cyril, a gay man living through conservative and Catholic Ireland. His thoughts, actions, mistakes, and triumphs will make you weep with despair and then laugh out loud. Not since Call Me By Your Name have I felt the incredible intensities of love and I have never found myself crying with joy of just perfect storytelling. This book is a masterpiece and must live on for a very long time.

Much like our idea of Jamaica, this cover and title is just a front. The dialog is written in thick Jamaican dialect but captures the troubles that lie beyond the resort walls in Montego Bay-- the extreme poverty and religious intolerance that runs throughout. A heavy family drama that is full of twists and turns that make Here Comes the Sun read a lot like a play.

A quick but absolutely beautiful read! The wring style really reminded of me Donna Tartt especially when describing the bitter north eastern cold and winter storms. The narrative throughout this book kept me hooked. This is a beautiful, multi-story novel that is so well done that you cry. I sighed a huge sigh after finishing and gently placed the book down as if it were a baby. The amazing part of this is that I read the ARC of this novel. I can only imagine how beautiful the published version must be with corrections and additions. If you loved Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin, you'll love this even more.

It's not too often that I read nearly an entire novel in one day. This book was just so unbelievably pleasant in every way and it turns into one of those books that you keep thinking about even when you've put it down to shower or eat and you have to pick it right back up when you're finished! Our main character is Quinn, gay, about to turn seventeen and has all the characteristics of a seventeen year old; however, there is a terrible tragedy in his family that takes place just before the novel starts that makes Quinn not your average seventeen year-old boy. All together, this is a pleasant little YA novel that is about our friend Quinn finding himself again, learning that not all of our heroes turn out to be heroes, and not everything is always as bad as it seems.

A book shining the light on extreme poverty, violence, and self acceptance, The End of Eddy is a small but heavy read that is so important to current times. It's poetic, unique, and devastating but you will always be rooting for Édouard in this autobiographical novel about growing up in a small French village with a small boy waking up every single day saying "Today I am really gonna be a tough guy." Sadly, an effeminate, and intelligent boy who finds other boys cute will never be allowed to be a tough guy in this poverty stricken village.

I am so glad that I had this book forced upon me for class. What an incredible story (loosely based on The Jungle Book) of belonging, coming of age, and journeying on your own.

The Graveyard Book is a perfect step into fantasy for those who don't tend to dip into the genre and are feeling a little wild. It's also a really great story that you will can hold with you forever no matter how old you get. I hold this kind of book on the same level as The Little Prince for its importance in children and adults.

It's just such a great middle-grade-but-bordering-on-YA book that should be spread widely!

I just love it when an author throws me for a loop. I was so disappointed in this novel while reading it until ~that part~ happened and all of your skepticism is validated and allowed. After reading History is All You Left Me and jumping back in Silvera's timeline, I now see serious growth as an artist. A long review on this book is dangerous because it could give away a serious spoiler to the entire thing so I'll keep it brief.

This is the perfect novel for anyone, not just LGBT people, but for anyone on a journey to find happiness. A reminder to everyone how important our memories are and how the past shapes our present and future.

A bit of a slow start but the idea itself will keep you invested. A world with no more death-- only a select few have the power to decide when it's someone's turn to be 'gleaned'. A whole separate world with it's own separated government is surely destined to become toxic. So toxic that they set two Scythe Apprentices against each other-- one will win the Scythe ring, the other will be 'gleaned' by the victor. A wonderful novel that occasionally hits a little too close to home in our current political standing.

If you're not familiar with Aciman's ability to demonstrate an intense passion through the human psyche then you're in for an intimate and powerful ride with language that is almost lyrical, raw, and candid that will make you in tune with your own aches, desires, and the emotions that come from failure especially from your own memory of that first love and the ones that followed it.

Deciding to read this book was such a good decision. This sort-of-not-really historical fiction ya novel is a (very) loose telling of the story of Rupert Buxton and Michael Davies (nephew to Peter Pan author, J.M Barrie) and their mysterious death. Now, this book is honestly rather absurd. And I loved it because of that. This plot, as absurd as it may be, was so delicious and invigorating and such a brilliant idea. Were some parts predictable? Absolutely. Do I care? Absolutely not. This is an amazing Halloween read full of all kinds of supernatural ghosty things and witchcraft and so much more.

I want to begin this review by stating that I am utterly terrified of this world. A pandemic is absolutely my biggest fear and being alive in a world like this haunts me everyday-- not joking. You know that computer game "Pandemic". It gave me such anxiety after playing it.... anyway. This book is absolutely beautiful. If you're looking for a really good dystopian novel that is actually rather realistic, as it is very obvious that it takes place in present, with such beautiful and captivating stories that intertwine together, then this is your book. I was immediately engrossed on the first page and knew that I was going to love this book. The middle got a little rocky and I began to worry that Mandel was faltering but she quickly rebounded and then exceeded into something that took my breath away. While this book is ~nearly~ perfect on the realistic side of things, parts of it are truly questionable and seemed a little rushed. A character miraculously safe in an airport full of hundreds of people after countless flights were forced to land there from all over the globe? This section of the story is truly my only critique and it would be completely acceptable if the rest of the novel was borderline unrealistic-- it just wasn't. Reader, you won't regret reading this book and, even if you don't have a completely irrational fear of global pandemics, you won't forget this story or these characters.

What a ride this was! I've honestly been waiting for a book to come around where I felt so instantly drawn to main character because I truly saw myself. Reading this book really, really brought me back to my 16 year old age and finding that first love. We can all think back on that and remember that nothing every quite felt like that again-- nothing will be more special, regardless of how it ended (if it did). It was even more amazing to see a YA book accomplish complete realistic circumstances at realistic times. This is a story of not only James coming to peace with himself, his sexuality, and his future, but also a story of his entire circle of friends and family coming to peace with James. Not a day goes by where I don't think about basically all the books I've ever read (not that it's been a whole, whole lot) but this is one I will think about and always find myself smiling.

With the addicting writing style that so deeply and almost exclusively represents Elio’s thoughts, the Italian Riviera setting that really warms you to the core, and the most powerful and gut-punching romance I have ever encountered in literature, Andre Aciman created  the perfect summer read. It is THE gay novel I have been waiting for. This is one of those books that I noticed is blowing up so I figured I'd move this towards the top of the reading list and I wasn't disappointed. This is the first magic-themed book I've read that I couldn't connect to Harry Potter in any way (which is truly impressive because fantasy has really changed with HP, in my opinion). This is a dark story about a magician who can travel between different worlds by the power of blood. Kell is tricked and given a mysterious package that turns out to be a huge threat to all three travel-able London's and it seems to have come directly from the (presumably) destroyed Black London.

The plot is a little obvious at some points but there are some others were you sit straight up out of shock. I have touched very little Sci-Fi and this is an excellent start if you're on that same boat.

A truly beautiful story that is so incredibly powerful that you’ll find yourself weeping in nearly every chapter. Every time you learn a new piece of Jude’s story a piece of your soul withers away to nothing. This is not a book to read if you’re looking for something happy so don’t go taking it on that much anticipated cruise to the Bahama’s (unless your thing is to be sad on vacation— I won’t judge you).

This precious little book gave me a bit of a startle. Before buying it I was skeptical because the narrative is a little different then what I was looking for. The paperback came out about a week later so I took the plunge and I wasn’t disappointed! This is another novel full of stories that converge into one and each one will just tear you into pieces. This book, however, will at least try to glue you back together at the end!

There is a reason Tartt won the Pulitzer and that is because she is truly gifted author. This book is more than just a beautiful novel. It is a book to understand the philosophy of life, understand the beauty of art (life in art/ art in life— these are often different!), and a literary understanding of a painting and it’s meaning and all of this is through one Dickensian, bildungsroman, gorgeous, and perfect (I can keep the adjectives going but I’ll stop here) novel.

To describe this book would take me a lot more thought than just writing a quick blog review. Isherwood's style of writing, imagery, and character development is indescribable. You really feel George's grieving, his anger, and his happiness. It's incredibly relateable in the sense that what George is feeling, you're feeling it for the exact same reasons. If you've seen the movie and decided 'oh, I just don't need to read that,' YOU'RE WRONG! You do need to read this! They are rather different. If you've read this book and haven't seen the movie, YOU'RE ALSO WRONG! The movie is fantastic! Anyway, this entire novel is just a masterpiece. Pick it up and read it.

Donna Tartt is my absolute favorite author. This book is full of the most beautifully crafted sentences I have ever read. This is a murder story-- but not a whodunit, rather a 'whydunit.' A warning: you're not going to like any of the characters. At all and if you do you are evil (like me who liked several of the characters but I am constantly in the minority). I can't tell anymore because I may ruin the whole thing but please give this book a try!

Is this a good book? Not necessarily. Will you still love it though? Yes. It is just a sweet, sweet YA novel that will give you the guilty pleasure/ emotional fuzzies you're possibly searching for in a YA novel. It's a complete Harry Potter spin-off which makes many so, so happy.

I was thoroughly amazed by how good this book was. I was SO captivated by Ari's teen-age boy angst throughout this entire novel-- to further that thought-- the way Saenz captured a gay, angsty, teenage boy during the Reagan era. It's a wonderful roller coaster of a ride and I wasn't disappointed and I don't think you will be either.
