Calla Leftwich - Manager

Bio: I’m from Michigan, where I studied ballet, French, and Russian. I ended up in New York just over a year ago (following my wife’s academics) after living in a few states and working various jobs (my favorite was managing a wine and beer department). Working in a bookstore is a new experience for me and I am loving this community surrounded by books.

1) What is your role as a manager for Book Culture?

I am a recent manager at Book Culture and cannot wait to get settled in the new store and find where my best fit will be.

2) How did you come to join the Book Culture family?

Shortly after moving to New York, I was walking down Broadway and stopped in the Book Culture on 114th, asked if they were hiring, and here I am.

3) What are your areas of expertise?

Acquiring more books, seriously I am great at finding more books to read then time allows.  I often alternate my books between non-fiction (partial to history) and fiction (more new fiction since working in a bookstore), though every once in a while a good mystery is essential.

4) What are you currently reading?

King Arthur's Enchantresses by Carolyne Larrington and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

5) What are you looking forward to most at Book Culture LIC?

I’m extremely excited to be a part of bringing a bookstore into the LIC area. I was thrilled to encounter Book Culture on 114th and 112th when I moved here and cannot wait to spread the joy of having such a great bookstore in another neighborhood.
