We’ve been asked a plethora of times by patrons about a Book Club, and we’re excited to finally start one! With so many who are new to the area, it seems like a great opportunity to get to know our neighbors around Long Island City.

Our first three selections will be:

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley - July 11, 6pm

A Cambodian-British government worker gets tasked with being a “bridge,” or a mentor,  to a Victorian era “expat” in modern day London. A man-out-of-time tale with humor, intrigue, and perhaps a little romance, it's a book that will enchant both a lighthearted reader and a cerebral one.

From your host, Melina:

The book’s interesting premise and charismatic cast of characters at once pull you through the pages, and make you contemplate grand ideas of time, space, and your place in it. I’m interested to know if others luxuriated in rumination or flew through laughing.

North Woods by Daniel Mason - August 8th, 6pm

North Woods is a beautiful, sprawling story set on a single plot of land and its inhabitants over the centuries. It’s a ghost story, a tragic love story, and so much more.

From your host, Tony:

There are so many things to discuss and I’ve been itching to make it a Book Club pick since I read it in November last year. If you love Cloud Atlas and books that make you consider the wonder of this world, read North Woods with bookseller Tony this August!

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo - September 13, 7pm

A historical fantasy set in the Spanish Golden Age that follows Luzia Cotado, a scullery maid with a penchant for magic who becomes embroiled in political machinations—and enlists the help of a secretive, immortal familiar.

From your host, Chloe:

I picked this book because I am a longtime fan of Leigh Bardugo, and I am so excited to read her next adult novel! The historical & magical setting sounds so interesting. I am looking forward to seeing how Bardugo explores Spanish history and fantastical phenomena in this book!

We’re hoping with these three first months to gauge the interest and audience amongst our patrons, so don’t worry if you aren’t seeing something that’s exactly your cup of tea. Differing opinions, good and bad reactions, or a change from your personal reading preferences can in fact lead to very exciting discussions! All bookish thoughts are welcome and encouraged, so long as they remain respectful, of course.

Each meeting will be led by a different member of Book Culture LIC staff and take place in the second week of the month, in the lower level of the store. Refreshments available! Purchase of a book is encouraged but not required for attendance. The first 10 people to sign up for Book Club will receive a 20% off coupon for their entire next purchase at the end of their selected meeting.

Book Club picks are included in the 20% off May Sale, and afterward will still have a discount of 20% off in-store and online with code LICBOOKCLUB
