Book Culture Celebrates Women’s History Month

There is no singular “women’s history”; the extremely vast and varied experience of womanhood can not be catalogued by one author or even one genre. In keeping with this idea, our Women’s History Month reading list features poetry, science fiction, politics, history, classics, graphic novels, and more. Whatever kind of reader you are, we hope our Women’s History Month reading list will introduce you to a new author, new genre, or new way of looking at womanhood.

Edward Said Library Showcase & Sale

This is the first of many blog posts will feature books for sale in our upcoming (and very exciting) Edward Said Library showcase, beginning with an opening reception on Friday, April 3rd, at 6pm and running through Sunday, April 5th. 

How did we acquire sixty boxes of Said's personal library? After the family of Edward Said donated a large portion of his library to Columbia's Butler Library, we were given many remaining texts inscribed by and to Said, as well as titles influential in the development of cultural studies, literary criticism, middle eastern politics, among others. 

 

Interview with Sasha Matthews, author of "Sitting Bull: A Life Story"

Last Friday, I had the chance to meet with writer Sasha Matthews at our 112th store for an exclusive interview on her debut comic book Sitting Bull: A Life Story.  Sasha Matthews is ten years old, attends fifth grade at a public school on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, and loves reading and writing comic books.  We talked for over a half-hour about how she came to write Sitting Bull, what it is about comic books that inspires her, her influences, and most of all, what she finds surprising and challenging about the comic-book writing process. 

Mumtaz! Eight Arabic Literary Standouts All Book-Lovers Should Know

The Arabic word for “awesome,” mumtaz, comes from a root meaning “to divide” or “to distinguish,” and Arabic literature comprises a vast and diverse web of texts – composed in locales from Sudan to Jordan to Yemen, by litterateurs ranging from the eloquent Arabian poet-warriors of the 6th century to the realistic fiction writers of the nineteenth century to the brilliantly inventive contemporary writers whose work blasts apart genres – all distinguished by a passionate love for the Arabic language and its possibilities. Whatever your preconceptions about what Arabic literature is or isn’t, you surely don’t have the whole story!

Q&A and Reading with Saundra Shohen

On Tuesday, April 14th at 6pm, Louisa Burns-Bisogno and Saundra Shohen launch their new page turner, The Night John Lennon Died . . . so did John Doe at Book Culture on Columbus. Based on true events, The Night John Lennon Died...so did John Doe is the ER Administrator's baptism by fire when John Lennon’s bloodied body is carried into Roosevelt Hospital's ER over the shoulder of a policeman. Moments later, in the next room there is the suspicious death of an elderly John Doe.  As the old man’s frail body is placed next to Lennon’s in the morgue van, Annie believes her involvement in these two senseless deaths is over. It is just beginning…
