About the Author

About the Author The 1877 masterpiece by English author Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was composed in the last years of her life. The bestseller was Sewell's only novel, publishing within months of her death. It has sold 50 million copies and remains one of the best-selling books of all time. Sewell was born in Norfolk, England, into a Quaker family. Her mother, Mary Wright Sewell wrote children's books. She had an injury which led to her walking with assistance or using horse-drawn carriages, which fueled her love of horses. Sewell visited Europe and met many writers and philosophers for the first time, expanding her horizons and exposing her to new ideas. She wrote "Black Beauty" back in England, sometimes from her bed due to poor health. She sold the novel when she was 57, with the goal of promoting a special relationship between men and horses and their humane treatment. She died five months after the book was published.
