This book is so immersive that I have yelled at it in public. Lewis did such a good job of feeding a soft-ball twist that I full blown choked on water for two minutes on Northern Blvd. because I didn't see the other twist coming!
Classic elements of a swashbuckler + love+ systemic oppression in space? = Holy smokes!
A story with such heart and beautiful artwork! It captures exactly what it's like to make friends that may be different than you and embracing those differences. The strong visual storytelling drives home the importance of the bonds of friendship and family and just how important saying "I'm sorry" to those people could be.
I never would have thought a story about a reluctant nanny, caring for children who spontaneously combust would be the most feel-good, heart warming (pun intended) book I've read all year, but here we are.
This book is such a wild introduction into a series, that takes a seemingly "classic" fantasy storyline and bends it into something completely new. It's an instant favorite. If you've read any of her work before, you already know and if you haven't, you're about to read a master world-builder in her element.
What do you get when you put a spoiled princess, a kidnapped prince, and a girl with a giant backpack stuffed with monster cheat sheets in a mountain FILLED with monsters? The answer is: An adventure you'll never want to end.
Ophelia is quiet and sassy. Thorn is cold and cruel. If you think you know where the story goes from here, you're dead wrong! This book had me guessing from beginning to end!
A buff orc assassin lady? A giant ancient serpent city? Seedy wizards? CULTS?!? This book is an action/adventure that wastes no time and plays out so cinematically. I can't wait for the rest of this series!
A book that balances a magnificent high-fantasy adventure with complex and nuanced social commentary. Strongly recommend for anyone struggling or who has struggled with anxiety or loss. Powerful and fun, it was such a good read!
